The works by Franco Vaccari acquired by Mufoco as part of the governamental funding scheme “Strategia Fotografia 2023” will be exhibited at the Museum from 25 May to 13 October 2024, accompanied by a selection of books by the artist.
On June 15 2024, an international symposium will be held at the Museum, curated by Nicoletta Leonardi, from 2.30 pm to 7.00 pm, with the following program:

Panel 2. Franco Vaccari’s artistic legacy within contemporary photography

Matthew S. Witkovsky will present a reflection on the formal or conceptual challenges to the notion of photography’s fixity posed by artists in the 1970s. Within this framework, the paper will address one specific approach, which we can call “live photography,” that involved creating photo-installations as a form of durational public performance. Vaccari’s Esposizione in tempo reale n. 4 at the 1972 Venice Biennale will be discussed in relation to coeval projects carried out by Takuma Nakahira in Japan and Mikki Ferrill in the United States. 
 
Alessandra Acocella will look at the relationship between photography, urban space and the verbovisual practices in the context of the Italian art scene of the 1960s. Two fundamental issues will be addressed: the dialogue and collaboration between Vaccari and artists such as Claudio Parmiggiani, Adriano Spatola and Carlo Cremaschi, and the dual role played by Vaccari as both artist and documentarist within the collective happenings Parole sui muri (Words on the Walls) carried out in the summers of 1967 and 1968 in the medieval Modenese village of Fiumalbo.
 
Nicoletta Leonardi will discuss Franco Vaccari’s numerous book projects, which he produced within the theoretical framework of what he defined as the “book-object”. Taking Vaccari’s practice as well as his theoretical writings as a starting point, the presentation will focus on the co-presence in the artist’s books of an approach marked both by conceptualism and by material culture and the experience of urban space.
 
Matteo Balduzzi, Elisa Medde, Luca Panaro and Salvatore Vitale will address the presence in Vaccari’s research of themes and approaches that are still present within current photographic practices, with a particular focus on photography’s materiality, intermediality, and agency, as well as on the processual and performative dimensions of the medium.
